Surface to Soul

"Australia is viewed on the world stage as having a strong sports ethos and zealous beach culture. Swimwear worn in both the sporting arena and as beach attire forms an integral part of this perception" - Surface to Soul

All of us at Gypsea are passionate about our swimwear! Last year, fashion photographer, Geoffrey Chuah, borrowed a few of our pieces for his new book release 'Surface to Soul'.

'Surface to Soul' is a hardbound photographic compendium of Australian swimwear. The book serves as a tribute to both women and contemporary swimwear design; being the mode of fashion that best encapsulates the female form.

'Surface to Soul' also chronicles the story of the evolution of swimwear from an Australian perspective and its contribution to changing social norms.

Did you know an Australian woman popularised the first ever piece of women’s swimwear? Or, that Australians adopted the bikini as a form of beach attire years earlier than the Americans? a

Wearing the swimwear of both new and established Australian designers, the models in 'Surface to Soul' showcase the wonder of the female body with the mode of fashion wholly embracing of it!

We recently had a quick chat with Geoffrey about his new book 'Surface to Soul' and photography work.
a
Q: Geoffrey, what gave you the idea for 'Surface to Soul'?

A: I love to photograph fashion and swim, so I originally came up with the idea of shooting a handful of swim stories, over a period of about a month, to submit to various magazines for publication. But a writer I was then working with encouraged me to turn those stories - and many more - into a book instead. That's when the idea of 'Surface to Soul' came to life. I did the shoots, she wrote about the history of swim and the contributing brands and we had a graphic designer get involved to pull all the content together.

Q: Why women and swim?

A: Everyone appreciates the beauty of the female form. There's also something magical about capturing the image of one's subject on some of the most incredible beaches in Australia!
a
Q: What do you love most about being a photographer?

A: I love seeing my ideas come to life after weeks of planning and hard work. I also love working with other creatives and viewing the final product in print. I'd have to say that this book is the highlight of my photography career thus far.

Q: How would you describe your photographic style?

Edgy and clean. I love shooting on location with natural light.

Q: What's your favourite beach in Australia?

Hyams Beach in Jervis Bay hands down. The sand is a perfect white gold colour. I shot model Brittaney Johnston on Hyams Beach and that shoot is one of my favourites in the book.
